Jim Holman will present eight lectures offering a broad survey of the life and art of Richard Wagner. The first lecture will describe the course of Wagner's life and career. It will include an excerpt from each of the ten Wagner masterpieces which continue to provide a central core of the operatic repertory. Lectures two and three will describe Wagner's innovations in the history of opera and music, focusing on both the leitmotif and the symphonic arc of Wagner's music. Lectures four through eight will survey five of the ten operas, in chronological order: Tannhauser, Lohengrin, Tristan and Isolde, The Mastersingers of Nuremburg and Parsifal.
The course will be offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at American University.
